Crysis video walk through

500 Words for Cascata Abitazione

Influenced by both “Falling Water” and the “Hemeroscopium House”, Cascata Abitazione literally meaning ‘waterfall dwelling. It is a place of paradise and serenity. Built on top of a tumbling waterfall, this building needs to be structurally sound and held in place and constructed with the uttermost care.

Long cantilevers and terraces are what adorn this building, stretching out towards nature, challenging and defying gravity. Made out of stone and reinforced concrete, the aim of the house is to make it relate to the nature as much as possible, making each space unique and in synch with nature.

A contrast between heavy and light materials, this building constantly challenges the concept of construction and structure. How is it that some slender steel beams can hold up several tons of heavy reinforced concrete? It all lies in the initial construction where everything is built around the centre living space. Rooms protrude out in different directions, and the swimming pool (influenced from Hemeroscopium) defies gravity by jutting out proudly in the air, precariously over the waterfall. Though it is kind of dangerous, it gives an exhilarating feel that some might enjoy.

Narrow corridors and hall ways open up into large spacious areas where the residents can enjoy the open air and spectacular views. This was purposely constructed this way to maximise the sense of space. Constructed like the Hemeroscopium House, the beams within this building intersect with each other, and help support each other’s weight, evenly distributing the load of the residents and any  external forces that might be acting on it.

The sense of space and light is very important to a house like this. Maximum lighting is achieved through large windows where the light can shine through. The numbers of windows present also allow a more spacial feel, making the interior a little bit more airy. This is essential as the materials used to construct the building are of heavy material.

Fitted out with 2 large bedrooms, and entertainment room, lounge, kitchen and bathroom, this house is meant for a small family or a couple. The separation between the bedrooms allow privacy if the client wanted to turn it into a guest room. Spaces are nearly all in a way exposed to the elements, ensuring great caution when walking between places. This sense of caucation reduces as the viewer is lost into the panoramic beauty of the nature. when the sky begins to dim, luminous LED lights start to beam, illuminating the whole building, giving it a glow similar to the moon.

This contrasts with the fact how in the day time, it blends with the nature in every way, but when it reaches night time, it stands out, just like how the building stands out by jutting over the cliff. This shows how just simple lights will be able to change the perspective of an object and make you think again how you will perceive such an interesting dimension in space. Truly, the Cascata Abitazione is a paradise brought down from heaven itself.

Model Renders & Concept Ideas for Deconstruction

This building has a strong implementation on construction, space and balance. I have noted the heavy weights of the concrete beams on the slender steel joists and columns, which give a sense of defiance in the terms of gravity. I wish to see what the building looks like without the heavy beams and focus on the space created by the supports and how the building through its construction stretch out into the distance with a sense of 'un-limitlessness' (inspired by the floating swimming pool). I will compensate the 'i' beams for things more useful like rooms having the roofing stretch out and extended to make overlapping intersections with each other. This way, there will be a chance to maximize the amount of space available to the building.

Video Demonstration
This video shows the construction development and process of layout. This is an important feature of the building as everything centers around the main beam- spreading out in equilibrium to create individual and unique spaces.

ASSIGNMENT 2 - CHOSEN PIECE OF ARCHITECTURE

HEMEROSCOPIUM HOUSE
Architect: Anton Garcia-Abril from Ensamble Studios

For the Greek, Hemeroscopium is the place where the sun sets. An allusion to a place that exists only in our mind, in our senses, that is ever-changing and mutable, but is nonetheless real. It is delimited by the references of the horizon, by the physical limits, defined by light, and it happens in time.
Hemeroscopium house traps, a domestic space, and a distant horizon. And it does so playing a game with structures placed in anapparently unstable balance, that enclose the living spaces allowing the vision to escape. Heavy structures and big actions are disposed in a way to provoke gravity to move the space. And this way the place is defined.

Independent Study Week 5

Zaha Hadid Poster
Layout: A double page spread, well layed out.  The architecture takes up nearly one whole page, making it a dominant feature. The text flows around this architecture and the car to the left, demonstrating the flow of character Zaha Hadid possesses. The use of carefully cropped images fitted within the title height gives an orderly effect, contrary to the flow, thus making them more visible to the naked eye.

Proportion: The text is in a grid of four, and though small, is enough to be informative and short enough not to be too intimidating. The scaled image of the architecture draws the viewers eyes first, the eye flows down the curve and torwards the text, which then goes to the vehicle then back up to the text. The proportion of the large image taken one whole page, and the text was quite effective and it took away the overwhelming effect that small text might give.

Font: The title has extra large typeface and sports an unique font different from the default. The use of bold text within normal text gives the impact a title needs. The font of the actual spread is small, and it flows around the pictures, giving them character. I find the font a little bit small, and some people would rather not read all those small text. A quote or statement starts of, in a larger font giving that 'professional sheen' to the overall appearance of the magazine spread.

Colour:
The black and white colours of this poster contrast well with each other and creates a simple but stylish look to the poster. White font are used in black backgrounds and black font used in white.

Week 4 - Refinements

300 Word Process Report
The first assignment for ARCH 1390 was one which is currently fun, but time consuming. Throughout this assignment, I have explored around five programs- 3DsMax, Sketchup, Crysis, Build AR and SPORE. I plan to be quite efficient in all of these programs at the end of this assignment. Requirements for this assignment include a blog, sketches, photographs, and of course, the digital work.

This assignment started off by researching a designer and their work, and from that, drawing our own inspirations for our work. I have drawn inspiration from Zaha Hadid and her buildings - The Maggie Centre and the Chamber Hall. I chose these two architecture as they are the opposites- one building is sharp and acute, the other one flowing and curved.

The next process was to make paper models based on the buildings, then design clients using SPORE. We had to be creative and basically, this exercise was fun but it challenged your mindset. I wanted my clients to be totally different from each other. What resulted was a client living in the high, snowy mountains with a quick temper, and a client in the depths of the sea, full of grace and serenity. I have named my clients Lorcan (a snowy leopard with wings) and Seacil (a female sea dragon).

What came next was the challenging part. Putting your paper model into digital context. I found this part quite challenging, and only so far modeled one building successfully. I will continue to do my model but meanwhile, I want to get this done first. I've got Lorcan's building done first, and it draws influence from the Maggie Centre, following the sharp and crisp edges. After the modelling of Seacil's building, I will start on the poster, which I will do relatively fast. Through Zaha Hadid's thinking of character and expression, I have attempted to incorporate the expressionism of her architecture into my work and I hope my end result won't look too far away from my goal.

Grid Concept Layouts
This poster is more for show of graphics design than being informative. The number of pictures and the size may vary on the final product.

This is influenced by Zaha Hadid's poster. The colour theme might actually be black and white as well. At the moment it all seems very 'straight forward' but I will try diffuse the strict grid lines using the background. The text would flow around the images as well.

Independent Study Week 4

Augmented Reality Inspiration

This video gave me a clearer understanding of what I might be doing for my augmented reality.
What captivated me was the animations of the cars going to and fro, in and out of the building.
I find it interesting how the building can change colours as well. The interior of the building was just awesome, and it shows what an useful tool augmented reality can be- in the future, if you build a house and it's not ready to be released but you need some feedback, just send it over for others to see discretely :P
